Beware of roaming charges while abroad
With the school holidays fast approaching and with many people going away for some much needed rest & relaxation we thought we should make you aware of the costs of using your smart phone abroad.
Many of us now have a personal computer in our pocket always connected to the internet and we would be lost without access to our Emails, Facebook and online apps like checking the weather.
However some of us don't want to be disturbed by all this when on holiday but forget to turn off or check the settings on our device. So we get our Emails and Facebook notifications while on the beach and pay for the inconvenience too!
This uses data: Data costs abroad are extortionate and who knows how much we are using?
Four out of five holidaymakers have been hit with a phone bill £100 more than their average monthly bill following a trip abroad, new figures have revealed.
According to research, 81% of holidaymakers received a high phone bill on return after using their mobile internet abroad. While 79% of smartphone said that they intended to use their mobile internet abroad this summer, just 6% of consumers were fully aware of how much they would be charged per megabyte for accessing the internet on their smartphone abroad.
So what can be done? Simply make sure you have either the correct data bolt on's with your network before you travel or remember to set up your device so that it will not access the internet while abroad unless you make the request to access the web or Emails
If you are taking your device with you we recommend you call us before you travel to check it will work and ask the following;
How
much will it cost to make and receive calls?
How
much will it cost to send a text?
How
much will I be charged for data?
How
do I turn data off while roaming?
Thinking of taking your iPad or Playbook abroad then you may find this article interesting at Broadband Choices about keeping costs down
Thanks for reading our newsletter - we'll be back again next month.
